Eric Maundu
kijani Grows - smart aquaponics systems for urban gardening
Kijani Grows is a farming technology organization located in West Oakland. We use aquaponics to improve life in urban and rural communities by utilizing traditional concepts, local materials and modern technologies. Kijani is the Swahili word for the color green; Kijani grows means Green grows. Our vision is to reduce disparities by addressing common basic needs using aquaponic technologies and systems through education, job creation and local food access.
Eric Maundu never wanted to be a farmer. Raised in an agricultural community in Kenya, he learned early on to equate that way of life with unrewarding, sunbaked drudgery. Given the opportunity to go to college, he opted for a career that would take him as far away from plows, chickens and fertilizer as possible – electronics and computer science. Now, 14 years after moving to the Bay Area, the soft-spoken programmer is once again reaping and sowing crops – though this time with technological help. http://www.kijanigrows.com/ |

Community Guilds
HiveMind is excited to practice a test run of our community guilds model. Participants can choose one of 3 areas to focus on for this session: Technology, Health & Wellness, or Ecology. Using the World Cafe model of group discussion, we'll ask each other:
What do you see happening in your community in this area that needs to be addressed better?
Do you see ways that HiveMind could serve this need?
HiveMind Guilds are intended as a community grassroots think tank. Through collective dialogue developing toward action, we hope to demonstrate a forum for solutions-oriented community power.

Orion Freeman
Orion Freeman is a singing, songwriting, guitar-playing seeker from the woods just beyond the mortar and bricks of Philadelphia. His souled-out, reggae-infused, flamenco-tinged, bluesy folk-rock aspires to move: your shoes; your heart; the cobwebs, so as to allow your soul to shine. Hovering somewhere within the chasm between the worldly and the divine, his music is an intimate glimpse into the spiraling states of freedom and folly, playfulness and prayer.
